Can I replace cam spray bars without press?
How hard is it to replace cam tower spray bars? CAn it be done simply with punch to tap out plugs and hammer to tap in new ones?
Am I correct in assuming there's not much to lining them up as I see on plugged inlet end there's a pin on bolt that goes into a hole in the spray bar. thx! |
I never have taken one out but it looks like you could drill out the plugs, why are you taking them out? did you have a bearing fail? You can clean them out by leaving your cam in (I use an old cam) to close the oil holes and run a spring wire down the spray bar, followed with brake clean and high pressure air..

You are right to take them out.
IMHO... They slide out easily enough once the retaining screw is out. I use an accurately sized ground ended steel drift, and just tap gently. I reuse one of the aluminium plugs by driving it out with a long corrct size stainless steel rod. theother I make, but you can buy them.. kind regards David Kind regards David |
reason I'm taking out is had a cam lobe that was all chewed up and it turns out that hole was clogged. Testing other side there is one or two that are questionable. saw some material partly hanging out holed.
going to be safe and ensure I get all junk out and take them out. should I drill just one end out, remove tube and tap in new plug OR tap one end and and use it to push out the other plug via the tube? Remember, when I say drill out, it will be with hand drill. |

ah, that threading the plug worked like a charm. ...just pulled that thing right out. A 5mm wasn't quite strong enough (stripped nut), but 6mm was great.
Just took exit end out now i'll be flushing like crazy. ..btw -- remember this thread? hole plugged on spray bar on that lobe. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/253159-can-cam-fixed.html?referrerid=30901 |
