my marelli distributor is sitting inside my 2.8 that is built from a 7R case.

Are there any identifying numbers on the marelli distributor to identify its origin?

Henry, If you want to PM me the price on a set of 98mm p/c that have enough valve relief to handle Elgin Mod S. cams and enough dome height to get the compression up I'd appreciate it and certainly consider buying from you when/if the time comes.

thanks.

I agree. What I didn't say in that exact spot in the book is that you need to run 94 in order to run this high compression without other tricks (twin plugging, etc). If you have access to 94 (common in some states), then it should be okay. You *could* always get the chip remapped if you have problems. If you don't have access to anything more than 91, then you'll have to stick with the lower compression...

Thanks Wayne!! I just bought your book last night and I can't stop reading it:D

I'll make a not in my book.

Thanks!!!

I am bringing back this thread because my mechanic has a different solution to the problem. He has a trough cut into the pistons from the intake to the exhaust valve for better flame propogation. This , he says allows a more thorough burn at a given c/r and increases scavaging, thereby reducing the need for twin plugs. Sounds pretty cool but I have no idea if it works. Engine Gurus weigh in please

P.S. My mechanic is highly thought of here in the eastern Pa./northern NJ. area.

Hi:

Machining a trough does work providing one has sufficient dome thickness to safely perform this modification,....:)

It improves burn rates and reduces the amount of advance for best power. It reduces octane appetite a bit, but not the need for twin-ignition.

BTW, who is your mechanic???

I have a row carrera 3.2 with the 10.3 compression ratio. A year ago I put a Steve Wong chip in it and it lit a fire under it. the car runs great no detonation. my car was federalized in 87 so I have the 87 version motronic unit in it. no problems lots of power, I also took out the cat and put in a fab speed euro pre muffler.

Fred Apgar, he's been around for a long time, and seems to know his stuff.

Forgot to mention Fred uses a JE racing piston with sufficiant dome to make this mod.

I was doing some searching on the forum when I detoured into this thread. It brought back some sad memories of a 911 that once was. Iris blue 3.2 with paint matched fuchs in superb condition in and out. high millage on guage but about 30,000 on a "fresh" 3.2 with 10.3 Mahle P&C. Work was done by PO(mech at Porsche dealership). The car ran perfect on 91 in south Florida heat with no issues. the car was in an accident and totalled by the insur. comp. but I should have fought harder to keep and repair it. There was mainly left front collision damage, not minor but not major either. looking back, worst case, should have bought it back(salvage title) just for the engine alone!
Curious of any leads on this car or engine. It would have been in an south Florida auction circa 2005... WP0ABO918FS120569
