so do i need to buy a mechanical chain tensioner for my rebuild?
 
or is there another way?

No. If you're referring to the cam timing procedure, then you can use a "C" clamp on the left side. The right side is trickier. A mechanical tensioner is perfect for the that side; however, you can get around it. I used a bolt and a thread coupler to tension the right side idler arm. The thread coupler wedged into the bottom of the chain case with the head of the bolt pressing against the idler arm. By "unscrewing" the bolt from the coupler, I could tension the chain adequately.
