Piece of metal found in oil sump
A friend of mine has an SC which he drove hard recently. It is a stock 3.0 with about 180k. After his hard run the engine began to make a light knocking sound and runs rough - it is difficult to pinpoint where the knock is coming from. After removing the oil sump cover he found a piece of metal. The metal forms the shape of semi-circle, it is about a 1/4 inch wide, has one side which is chamfered and shiny, and it is magnetic. I think it may be a part of the valve but I don't know - I posted a pic - any ideas would be appreciated.

Almost looks like a valve seat that split and broke, but how would it get to the sump.
Need a pic showing top and bottom also.

Its hard to tell what it is but regardless it sounds like a teardown is warranted...its hard to think of something that size being at the bottom of the case and not having to go inside....sorry to say.
Cheers, Mike

He should sign up with AAA and take an equity line of credit for a full rebuilt if he keeps driving it. It looks like it needs to come apart one way or another soon. I would stard with a leak-down and compression test to isolate where the issue is. Next is to take the heads off and check for valve seat damage. The bottom end could still be fine as long as there wont be catastrophic failure. However, with metal pieces going through the system I would not take the risk and do only a partical rebuild unless you can be 100% all scrap is accounted for.

Any time you get the combination of , engine sounds funny, not running right and metal pieces in the bottom of the engine, it's time to not start it again and pull it out and tear it appart. even letting it idle could cause hundreds of dollars more damage than already done.

Any heavy bits or lots of fine metal on the magnetic plug in the oil tank?

Thanks for the info guys. That was the only piece that came out - there were no chunks or small pieces. Looks like my friend is destined to do a rebuild.
