What would you do?? head concerns...

1978 3.0sc pretty close to stock starting point, has SSI's & misc...the parts are starting to pile up

Its finally going to happen, dad and I are rebuilding the motor at last. Anyways im not going to go too in depth with the specs but I need some advice on what to do with the heads. First off its a hot rod street car, the tranny is being swapped from a mag case 915 with the 7.3:1 r&p to either a later alu case 915 or a short bellhousing g50.

The current exhaust is SSI, almost 100% sure it will be swapped for 993 heat exchanger exhausts, so matching the ports is not simply just a little cleaning up. The intake size will be determined by how much air the cams and CR will need. No worries there just wondering what some ppl with short stroke 3.2's with twin plug and somewhat hot cams and good CR have done to their heads. I dont want to go larger on the valves, if that is needed then the 3.2 heads are the way to go yes? Meaning if larger valves are beneficial I would rather get a set of 3.2 heads, sell the 3.0 heads and go from there instead of hogging out 3.0 heads on the ports and valves and seems a bit more costly.

Ok am I rambling on too much now? Please advice is greatly appreciated

Have you fixed the budget yet?
Unless you start there, you'll never fix anything...and be doomed to go round and round forever..

Kind regards
David

Set some goals that you would like to see out of your motor. You want it to be a hot rod...how hot would you like it? What rpm, etc. Congrats on getting started!

The goals as outlined by my father and I are as follows:

1. No carbs, no cis, possibly mfi, independant throttle bodies, efi, distributorless

2. Reliable, somewhat streetable, gunning for 75,000 miles before rebuild.

3. No giant cam surge, a bit is totally acceptable.

4. Start up right away and purr like a sewing machine.

5. Cost, is an object although we were planning on buying a 3.6 and then rebuilding that, thats where the original budget came from.

6. Look great, sound badass, make a bit more power than normally seen from streetable short stroke 3.2l motors around.

Most of the basic parts have been ordered, the p&c's will be ordered shortly followed by the cams. LN nickies with JE 10.5:1, DRcams with a modS grind or slightly hotter.

An engine is an air pump and choking it with inadequately sized heads would be a total BIFF at this part of the game. We figure the cost of 3.2litre heads can be offset by selling the original 3.0l heads once the engine is torn down.
