Treating Gaskets
I now have the following chemicals/sealants (thanks Henry of Supertec!!!):
*ThreeBond 1104 *ThreeBond 1211 *Curil-T *Loctite 574 What is the general consensus about treating some of the paper gaskets with sealants such as 574, Curil-T, 1211, etc.? For example, in Wayne's book he advises the use of Curil-T on the cam shaft backing plate paper gaskets as an added measure against leaks. He also advises the use of 574 on the cylinder gaskets. What about applying this same approach to the paper gaskets found on the chain box covers, the chain box to crank case interface, the breather cover, etc. I'm sure this info might be considered secret-insider-tricks-of-the-trade-voodoo, but let's hear it experts! Give us mere mortals the scoop. Which gaskets and which sealant? I've assembled a lot of engines over the years, and my approach has always been to leave gaskets un-treated. This time, I'm taking the "this thing better not leak a drop of oil" approach. Thanks In Advance Jeff

IMO, the only reason to put a sealant on a paper gasket would be to hold it in place during assembly or to make up for a problem in a sealing surface like a nick or scratch.
YMMV I'm sure others will disagree. BTW, If I do need to use something on a paper gasket for the reasons listed above, I use Hylomar. |

Yeah, I 'fess up to putting goop on paper gaskets.
I use blue hylomar or sometimes the thin runny brown stuff.. Kind regards david |

Jeff,
The guru looking over my shoulder (Chuck Miller at Millersport) tells me to use various goops based on whether it is a gasket area that traditionally has problems and whether one is likely to have to take the part off soon. He suggested a twin-fingered wipe to cover both sides of the gasket being coated. I've noticed that it 574 works better with that method than the Threebond (574 stays less tacky). Good luck, Mike |
