EFI, what exactly do you need?
Jenvey in the UK sells porsche itb kits for a tad under 3k, you get throttle bodies, manifold, trumpets, fuel rails and tb connectors.
So thats mechanicals set Injectors, trigger wheel, trigger wheel sensor, wiring harness, brain, coilpacks, plug wires, is there anything else to run a basic daily driven car? It needs to idle nicely, pull smoothly, adjust for air density changes and thats about it. I know clewett sells an electromotive kit but ive heard differeing things on the quality of electromotive. Rennsport sells theirs with DTA or Motec brain whatever you want. Its just a hot rodded street car and we dont want carbs or the damn CIS, mfi would be cool but your pretty much set on the engine configuration at that point. So what have you crazy folks done that have built your own or put in homegrown style efi systems. The sds megasquirt stuff looks a tad too homegrown for my liking. Comments, knowledge, its all welcome. Please please help me out, the build starts very soon, it wasnt meant to but things happen that push schedules up. thanks, ryder |
some love SDS (simple digiital system)
|
I have ran SDS...simple in respect to additional items required. Sadly it lets you down on data logging and wide band feedback. It also lacks some in the absence of high quality connectors for the wiring.
It is simple. It was dependable for me. It does work with little else to purchase and has several ignition options. I will likely reuse my system on another project car someday. |
I've been pretty hard on Electromotive in the past, and maybe justifiably so. However, the customer service from Electromotive and above all, Clewett's, have made all the difference. My car now runs strong and reliably. I am really enjoying driving it, and fine tuning it. I think you owe it to yourself to talk to Clewett - class operation that stands behind product. Its been a year and a half since I bought my stuff from him and he still gives me advise and takes time to answer my questions.

You could do megasquirt if you don't mind keeping your ignition, it's the cheapest way into the EFI scene.

I want to second electromotives customer service. I installed the HPV-1 system on mine and started having problems, they sent me replacements PLUS loaner spares, spent a LOT of time on the phone with me diagnosing the issue, bench tested my uints to find the failure points, etc... I've never had such great service before.
My problem ended up being random voltage spikes that only showed up on a 'scope.. Not their fault and they still stood behind their replacement! |
I'll third SDS. Their support is also very good. Systems are very simple to install and configure for the novice. Hard to beat for the price. I've also used the Autronic and have had customers run the Link system with excellent results. Both the Autronic and Link have auto-tune features and closed look operation, but with the simple interface of the SDS, the auto tune really isn't needed- and the newest revisions have closed loop that works very, very well.

Well if want ignition control with fuel injection then the new MS-II is a good option. It has 16x16VE tables, the tec2 only has 8x8, don't know about the tec3 or sds. And it has the ability to control coil packs for ignition. The MS-I supposedly can control spark as well, but i dont know how it's rigged up to do so. I imagine that's what 1972_911T is talking about. Also, if this is a consideration, the MS-II can also control a stepper motored idle air control valve. As far as i know the MS-I only has the ability to control a fast idle device, basically an on/off unit to raise idle during cold startup.

Thanks a lot everyone. Ordering the newest electromotive system, fuel, ignition, all that fun stuff from clewett. Throttle bodies are coming from the Jenvey distributor in nor cal, cant wait. The motor and trans are out, engine bay is ready to head off to paint, tearing down the motor and taking stuff to the machine shop and plater and powdercoater this week.
Im headed back to the garage. Pics and story and all that will go up soon in its own topic. Cheers |
I would go with the Accel Gen 7
|
Tell us about it, I went to their site but info seemed pretty limited.....
Cheers |
You can get all the basic info on their site. The simple thing is you can buy a dizzy they make that will allow the system to be full sequential. The dizzy has the cam and crank sensor built in so you basically have a plug and play system. I have used the accel units on my mustang so I passed it on to the Porsche. In the end the system is only as good as the tuner. There will be a porsche coming out soon that should be in the 1200-1250+rwhp range with a gen 7 on it. It already maxed out a 800rwhp dyno with ease on low boost:) I have an extra distributor with custom wires and a msd for the unit I will put up for sale soon.

They make a dizzy to fit Porsches? single or twin plug? I will go back and try that site again to see if I can dig up more info!
Thanks |
They make one for single plug. Here is a pic of my engine showing the distributor.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140302159.jpg

Is that motor done yet? I remember posts from long ago about it. I am having second thoughts about the Tec3R bits after reading through some posts. The MS-II looks interesting and I think Souk mentioned they sell a kit. I cant access the price listing on his website, motomotions.com so I have to wait and call him up on monday. I would like something thats as close to plug and play as possible, meaning everything I need comes in the kit, wiring, sensors, coilpacks, trigger wheel, all that.
|
The accel unit is very simple to install. Your cam and crank sensor is in the distributor so that makes life very easy. For an ignition all you wire in is a msd 6a and use the factory coil. My engine has been done for a while, but I am waiting on my custom intake and intercooler to be finished.

Very cool but can you fire 12 plugs from it? I need to because of the CR I am running and I wont be able to always have higher octane gas to mix into a tank.
