More 2.7 detonation pixs... Warning, graphic content!!

This is a follow up to my previous 2.7 carnage thread... Finally got to get my pistons out this am. Looks my engine had some serious detonation! #1 had some big chunks missing and the side of the piston exploded! #2 has a ring land broken, looks like the cyl is scored. #4 has a nasty cyl wall scrape.

Heads have puck marks. PO said he ran the car with the dist 180 deg. I doubt that the engine would start. Something must have happened to cause this massive damage. Pistons and cyls are labeled Mahle, are they Nickasils? Or did Mahle made Alusils. Looks like I'll be looking for a complete set of P&C and heads...

Also, the thermostat was stuck in place. Broke in half while trying to remove. Had a real hard time removing the broken lower part. Any one know why this could happen? Lou

That cylinder looks like ausil to me.

Mahle did make an alusil type cylinder though they called the material something different. Can’t recall the name off hand.

Though my experience is a statistically small sampling. It seems like every time I've seen Mahle alusil cylinders they were involved in a catastrophic failure.
