Case sealant
I was wondering if this stuff (loctite 515) might work as a case sealant?
http://tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/515-EN.pdf I got a free tube off of my dad who says that they use this at his job and swear by it like it's the next best thing to sliced bread. From reading through the data it would seem that it's very forgiving of uneven surfaces with gaps (allows up to .25mm gap without an activator !!!) However there is info on those sheets that i don't understand as well which is why i'm asking. Here's 574's tech sheet for reference. http://tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/574-EN.pdf |
At 100 deg C you're down to 25% strength on the 515 compared to almost 70% of the 574 - that does not sound too promissing with engines at operating temperatures around 90 - 110 deg C. Why take chances?

I have been using Loctite #518 for several years now. It is wonderfull stuff! I use it on case halves and cam towers. http://www.loctite.be/eu/PRODUCTS/518.htm
One of the other guys in the shop has experimented a couple times using Honda Bond. http://powersports.honda.com/the_goods/parts_and_service/detail.asp?ProductGroup=Assembly+%26+Repair&PartId =08718-0001&PartValue=Hondabond+HT&TheGoodsDir=2&bhcp=1 We have not tried it on cam towers yet but on the case halves it works really good. |
Looks like locktite 574 has the best heat to strength rating, however 518 has a better gap filling abilities with up to .5mm gap filling. I'm wondering though how much shearing strength a case sealant would need, it would seem that not much sealant surface area is in contact with pressure to cause significant force and in turn some decent shearing loads.

ThreeBond 1104, in conjuction with TB 1211 and Loctite 574.
Ciril T on the cylinder bases. |
I used 518 on case halves, dow 730 on cam towers, and a very light curil bead on nose of #8 and other seals. Also used o-ring lube on all o-rings. 4Kmiles and no leaks

Thanks for reminding me of threebond henry, i had forgotten about that, going to find some data sheets on that stuff right now. I've never heard of dow 730, going to see if i can find that one, thanks.
Edit: I remember reading that you put threebond on the case perimeter with 574 on the crank webs, why not threebond everywhere? |
We have tried many different combinations and as of now, what we do with sealants has proven to be the best.
No theories, just practical experience. Hundreds of engines, plenty of mistakes and 30 years later we seem to have it right. Will other products in other combinations work? sure But we guarantee no leaks and we can't take any chances. |
Cool, i guess i know where i'll go with the sealants.

What is the recommendation for the through bolt O-Rings on a 3.6?

I used Hylomar and it does not leak 15k miles later
