Time for a rebuild?
Hi, I have a 1989 Carrera 3.2 with only about 60000km on the clock. The engine runs very well and strong, but I seem to have a fair bit of smoke. From cold, the engine will generally smoke until it gets to operating temp. Once warm it generally does not smoke at all, but there are exceptions to the rule - once in a while it will start smoking slightly when warm. I have not yet done a compression or leakdown test.
The engine has no oil leaks, but I need to top up about a litre every 1000-1500km. Is there cause for concern? I previously owned a 911SC which had run 250000km, occasionally gave out a puff of smoke on startup and never used any oil. I have had differing advice on my Carrera ranging from 'you need a top-end rebuild' to 'don't worry about it, they all do this'. Thanks! Hardi |
The oil consumption you state says that you are burning oil at a rate higher than normal.
Poor rod angles and Alusil cylinder have led to premature piston ring wear in 3.2. If it smoked on decell I would think you had valve guide issues. Although smoking is annoying, it really isn't a problem that will lead to major failure. If you can live with the smoke, check the oil level regularly and drive the car. If you are truly annoyed by the smoke, it's time for a top end. The weak link in the 3.2 Carrera engine is the connecting rod bolts. They stretch and the bearings fail. Rod bearing failure in the 3.2 would be a greater concern to me. |
