964->993 On Case Oil Filter?
In the category of "while it is apart" I am interested in seeing if anyone has fitted the on engine oil filter console used on the 993 onto the 964 case. Thoughts?

This is what I would like...
And yeah, I am expecting to have to do something different with the oil feed line on the bottom...

I converted my 1979 930 engine build to a 993 oil filter console instead of the engine mounted cooler for a couple reasons. I'm running a very large front cooler so the engine one is not necessary. The filter console is much lighter than a cooler and it gives filtering to the pressure circuit like Porsche did on all its 6 cylinder race cars. Finally it will help remove some heat from the enigne area and the cylinder adjacent to the cooler. I purchased an adapter fitting and tube to attach to a stock "S" hose form Smart Racing. The console and t-stat cover are from Porsche.

Thanks TurboMan! I would be curious if you still have the part number for the thermostat cover you used, was it the 965 (964 turbo) part?
Edit: Did you have to relocate the Pressure and Temp senders for oil? Chris

I show two part numbers for the thermostat cover.
964.101.768.00 (for option M64.01/02/03) <-Is this the one needed for this update? 930.107.767.02

Chris, let me look through my reciepts which will take a bit, and find the numbers for you. The cover has tapings for 2 connections. The later cars moved both switches to this location I only put one back there so I would not have to alter my wiring harness. I just plugged the unused port. I'll shoot a picture and post it with the part number later. Thanks

Chris, the cover part number I used is 993 101 768 00. I was mistaken when I said I have one switch in the cover. Clearly I have both ports plugged. The lower fitting on the console is the Smart Racing fitting. A pipe attaches to that to provide a stock slip on hose when installed in the car. Hope this helps.

That helps a lot, thanks! Since you have an early engine (compared to the 3.6), you were able to use the standard locations for Oil temp and pressure. I am now trying to find out what I need to use for this to work

If your basis is a later 3.6 engine I would suggest buying all the parts for a 94 3.6 turbo that will work for your applicaiotn if you are staying with CIS. The t-stat block off covers never changed in size only layout of the ports. My enigne is actually a 3.6 built on a 3.3 case, sort of a stealth 3.6 turbo.

As an update, the solution for 964 cases appears to be part 930.107.767.02. See this thread for further details:

aturboman, my interest is piqued. Can you tell me more about your motor? 3.6 crank and 100mm cylinders? What cylinders did you use. Is it up and running? I'm was thinking about using 3.6 crank with 98's. Thanks

What is the red topped sensor attached to the oil line in the middle photo? I am in the middle of assemling my motor and there is an open hole where that sensor goes.

Correct the red topped sensor is the oil idiot light sender. It goes on top of a special fitting for the turbo oil feed pipe. In regards to my engine specs it is a 964 crank in a 3.3 case. Spigots have been opened up for 100mm Mahle pistons & Cyls. These are 3.5 conversions for a 3.3 engine. I was able to use the bump in stroke to increase my compression to 7.5:1. Minor machining was required for valve and piston skirt clearance. The 3.6 crank is a nice choice but there are a few complications with oil pump and case clearance and the front pulley as well. I never thought of a 98mm 3.6 crank combo but I'm sure it can be made to work fine as well. This engine is currently running modified CIS but is set up to be converted to EFI. I'm running a twin plug Andial distributor and a host of other goodies. It also went of a serious weight diet, RSR shrouding, all smog ***** removed, lots of aluminum and Titanium fastners, oil cooler delete ect... She should be going in for a test fitting in the chassis very soon, I'm anxious to see what it will do.

oh OK thanks!! glad it's only 5 bucks. The rsr engine cover on the back of the engine that you replaced with fiber glass ? it sits inches from the turbo my steel one was burned out and I had to replace it with a new steel one. your fiberglass one might catch on fire if not careful. I was having a tough time finding that piece so I enquired about the fiber glass kit and when they found out it was for a turbo was told it would probably catch fire and burn up the car.

It is a concern for me too. I have a special lightweight aircraft ceramic insulation on the underside of my front engine "tin" that covers the turbo and exhaust. My hot housing is also wrapped, so we'll see how they hold up. A fire extiguisher should always be on board on any aircooled car. I'll probably take two during the first shake down run! Thanks for the heads up.

No problem I have been looking for something to coat my steel one to keep it from warping and rusting. every on I have ever seen in a turbo was all warped and rusted. they cost $640.00 so obviously I dont want to spend 300 getting it jet hot coated or something like that.

The insulation I used is actually a blanket woven of ceramics. It was not really expensive and easy to cut and apply. Heat dissipating coating on the underside would be a great idea if the cost was not to prohibative. I'd suggest wrapping your turbo hot housing as well. It helps the turbo spool quicker and eliminates alot of radiant heat.
