Correct Fan Shroud Color

Sorry Guys my cat jumped on the keyboard. Anyway, As I have my MFI pump soaking in cleaner, I am going to repaint the fan cover, It looks like it was originally yellow, the engine has been rebuilt by the PO and the cover ws repainted red, I guess to match the car, anyway the engine was upgraded to 911s specs should I put it back to yellow or should I change it to the correct color for a 911s spec engine cover? If so what iwould be the color for the 911s cover? Am I making any sense here?

911S had red fan shrouds. If you are sure that the motor is really fully S spec, then you would be justified in painting it red. The motor I'm building is an S with E cams, so I repainted the shroud green as it was originally on my E. I don't want to be in the position of claiming I've got something I really don't have, and if the paint chips here and there it won't look terrible. -Scott |
That explains that why the PO painted it red. He also had the MFI rebuilt to "S" specs. Does anybody know the paint code for the red fan cover??

There is no paint code because the shrouds were gel coat not paint.
As for what color should you paint it, who cares? Paint it whatever color you want. Unless you're building a concorse car you should build what makes you smile. I believe far to much time is spent trying to make these cars correct and not enough times is spent making the owners grin. Big power, wide tires, custom color combinations are all the things that make these old cars (momey pits) worth the cost. |
I was told that Guards Red was the correct color for an S shroud. I sanded my black SC shroud and re shot it with Guards Red. It made me smile when done.

It's a new PMO kit.
All other hardware was bead blasted and replated. |

The wires are Moroso spiral core 800 ohm 8 mm. |

Rattle Can Red
Someone asked me today about the "proper" fan shroud color for our Porsches.
My 3.2 liter shroud was in poor shape and I decided to replace it and was wondering what color to paint it. I remembered seeing this thread last year during my engine rebuild process. I had always admired the Red 911 S engine shroud and decided I wanted to go that route. I purchased a used red shroud as it turned out from Tom Butler. I scuffed it up a bit before shooting it with a heat resistant red rattle can paint I purchased at a local auto parts store. Raw Fibeglass Shroud Kit
I like the looks of the raw fiberglass too. Something magical about it and oh so unusual. I wish I had saved the builder of this engine. Unfortunately I didn't. It sure looks nice.

I was talking to the owner of a nicely restored 2.2 S a couple of weeks ago.
He told me that he used Tandy leather dye to restore the red shroud on his motor. Has anyone done this or know the color or source of red Tandy leather dye? |
I lightly soda blast them followed wet sand and polish with fiberglass boat hull polish.
The 3.0 SC shroud in the above post was done with that process. |
if you have any class at all you will replace it with a carbon fiber shroud.
