CIS starting trouble

My 79 911SC will crank over till the battery runs down but will not start.
It started immediately and ran fine the other day to work and when getting in to go home that evening it would not start.
I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor and pulled 2 plugs and it smells like gas on them so I don't think it is not getting fuel.
I have not tried to see if there is an actually spark yet by pulling wires....but the CD box is humming when ignition is on.
2 things I noticed which seem strange......

1) Could it be a bad coil....do they just go like that?
2) The air flapper lever arm in the CIS air box seems to have alot of resistance to raising it, even with the car shut off. I know that it should be relatively free moving to allow it to meter the air as the throttle is opened. However, it seems awful stiff to me and I cannot remeber if this was normal with the ignition on and off.
Does someone know any detail of CIS to give me a hand?
I will plan on measuring fuel pressures tomorrow, but wanted some advice form the board here so I have ideas tomorrow to check out.
----Is there anyway to check the coil to see if it is bad?
----Fuel pump relay was replaced too with no effect.

I purchased my 1980 911SC and drove it home 1200 miles without it missing a beat. The next morning I backed out of the driveway and the car died....bad coil! No spark at the plugs. I walked over to my 67' Bug, pulled the Bosch Blue coil and it's been on the 911 ever since! Bosch "Blue" coil was $25.00...replacement OEM Porsche Coil was many times that amount. I can't tell the difference.
