Special tools 1973 2.4S

Hi

Can anyone answer me what kind of tools I need to remove the fan on my 1973 911. I am going to glass blast the fan to give it a "new" look. Pelican number/name would be appreciated. Should i part the fan before blasting it or can I just mask out the back side (is it the alternator that is on the beck side?) Is there anything I should be especially aware of?

Thank you!

I'll let the expert give you the tool advice.

I'd remove the fan to prepare and coat it well. Yes, the alternator is on the back (towards front of cat side).

Especially aware of? Yeah, go slow and don't break it. The cost for a fan is high.

Hi Gary

What do you meen by "coat it"? Should the fan be treated with something to keep nice or what?

Thanks for your advice!

John

"coat" as in powder coat or paint. Some folks like to have the magnesium professionaly clean their fans and then apply a nice solid color. Others prefer a clear coat.

John,

You will probably want to do both the fan and the housing together so they will match. I have had 2 early motors rebuilt and I went with the clear coat on each because I wanted the result to look more original, which I think from reading other posts about your car, you are also interested in. Your best bet is to remove the fan and take the alternator off to blast it. Also, if the center section of your fan is still gold be sure to protect it during the bead blasting. The metal is magnesium as was mentioned so it is porous and needs to be sealed.

Here is the 2,2S motor for comparison to a painted one.

Here is a '73E motor.
