A rod came out, what chance of welding?

The case is 901.101.102.7R and here is a picture.

Can this be repaired? and what other damage is caused?

Thanks.

WOW - that looks hella ugly!!!! I'm assuming you're talking about the large chunk of case cylinder spigot that has been broken off of number three bore?

I guess you can repair anything but at some point it's not fiscally smart. Being a 7R mag case I'm sure there's a lot more work to do than just repair the damage in the photo. (Line bore, case savers, decking etc.) I'd say that it would cost atleast $1500 in welding and machine work just for the case to make it usable and then you'd still have an iffy foundation.

Put that case out of it's misery and bury it.

It'll be cheaper in the long run to find a used 3.0 for your base to build on.

I agree with Bobby; the cost of repair isn't worth it. You can replace that case for $500, while the repair work to a magnesium case, if doable, would be at least three times that after welding and machining.

That rod must have bounced around in the engine compartment and taken out the fan support as well!! Just kidding I'd pitch it unless it comes form a very rare and or valuable race car. I've seen 7R cases for under $300 undamaged.

I wouldn't even consider trying to reweld and remachine it, but I wouldn't throw it out either. Use the two case halves to make a glass top coffee table. Great conversation piece.

Is there any possibility that the damage is only at case?

Meaning that the engine costs 500 euros, is it worth it? Without the auxillaries.

I doubt it.

1) You threw a rod. Why?

a) Did a bearing seize? If so, then potentially your crank will be shot also. Why did a bearing sieze? Oiling problems??
b) Did a rod bolt let go? Once again, once the rod separated from the crank, chances are it started to beat stuff up.

2) Where did the pieces go? What did they hit or get wedged against? Is there debris in the oil system?

I seriously doubt that you'll be able to save much from the core.
