3.4 litre from 3.2 litre using Mahle 98mm pistons.
In a lot of publications covering this capacity upgrade it is said that the heads need to be relieved around the circumference to clear the piston crowns. And having seen evidence in the forum I appreciate the problem.
Maybe I am missing something, but why would anyone machine the heads, which really needs a holding fixture to make it relatively straightforward, when with a lathe and four jaw chuck one can take a cut(1.5mm approx. subject to trial assembly?) off the outer top face around the circumference of the piston crown, which has the same effect, without ruining the heads for any future application? And having access to such a standard lathe we have no need to pay high bills to the fixture owner. Just a thought. On my conversion I have used JEs so the problem did not arise. And as each of these forged pistons is almost 200 grams(30%) lighter than the standard cast 95mm Mahle pistons I expect the standard rod bolts will be quite adequate. ![]() |
