Hydrolic Tensioner Wear

At the weekend I stripped off the left side chain housing to tackle an oil leak from the cam tower to chain housing seal. When I stripped off the tensioner I noticed there was quite a significant ridge worn into the top of the tensioner where it meets the idler arm. I didnt notice this ridge when I rebuilt the engine a couple of months ago and the engine has ony done 100 miles at the most, what could cause excessive wear on the chain tensioner piston?

I will try to post pics later of the wear.

Thanks Steve

Ive just been back to re-examine the mark on the end of the tensioner and noticed that the wear is in the wrong direction to be caused by the idler arm im at a loss now as to what could have caused the grove in the piston end im sure it wasnt there at rebuid.

I think its safe to say i found the source of my leak though look at the picture below this is the cam thrust plate as it was removed notice the remenants of the old gasket. The part of the gasket that would have been at the bottom (top left in the photo) a whole chunk of the gasket was pushed outside of the joint.

Any ideas why this would occur?

Steve
