2.0E vs 2.4T

Opinions on this? Which is more fun?

Regarding the specific cars i'm looking at the E has carbs, T is MFI.

Do they both run well? All things being perfect, I like MFI better, but the hotter cam is the ticket.

If they both run well (ie. all things being equal), I'd go with the 2.4T. Same power, better curve for daily use, MFI, and more upgradable in my opinion.

Stephen makes a good point, although the "better curve for everday use" is an overused mischaracterization, in my opinion. I drive a 2 liter 'S' on carbs and it is never an issue, even in Seattle rush hour traffic. You can't on the other hand undervalue the effect of that top end push from hotter cams when you want it.

If I were going to go the ultimate upgrade route, I'd buy the MFI car. It will be more expensive to upgrade mind you: the pump will need a new space came if you bump compression and decide to change cams, but MFI is much, much nicer to drive than Webers. Some would say there is no difference in terms of performance and drivability between MFI and PMOs; the same can't be said of Webers. Carbs are easier to upgrade regardless of brand, especially in terms of cost.

I still stand by my original point: Hotter cams are more fun to drive.

thanks for the input so far guys. anxious to hear more from the other experts out there!

at this point if i had the cash for upgrades/more power i'd probably go 2.7rs spec or find a 3.0 to drop in depending on how i feel about the way the power is delivered (lots o' torque vs. high rpm hp).

for now i just want a fun car to drive on weekends and hopefully at a few auto-x and DE events each year.

kenikh i didn't realize you were on carbs. i did also post a question regarding a combo in Wayne's book which appears to be an E engine w/ S pistons and carbs. that combo appealed to me as a possible low budget upgrade since the 2.0E i'm interested in already has Solex carbs on it.

i guess i really just need to drive a few examples of each but it's tough when you're not in Kalifornia or Washington (seems like a LOT of nice early cars in Washington).

My car is on carbs right now; that's how I bought it. I have a complete MFI system in the garage and was going to install it as is, but ran into some snags that got me rethinking and subsequently adding some additional nutty upgrades. Frankly, I don't think I'll ever buy a car without a 66mm crank. The 2.0E has the coolest crank Porsche ever made. I recommned it!

Juan (ervikingo) has a bunch of 2.0S pistons for sale; he's one of the good guys. I'd seriously consider the E/S hybrid in Waynes book. Oh here's the link to the pistons:

Street & Racing Parts - Episode 3

BTW, that 2.0E was MFI at one time. I'd buy it, track down an MFI later and then you'd REALLY have something.

Oh yeah, POST SOME PICS!!! "D

My daily driver is a diesel, and I like the low end that it provides during many driving situations, particularly stop and go. The flip side is my MG, with makes very little down low, and requires quite a clutch slide to get going. Once you're going, the MG is definately more fun to drive with it's peaky engine. Honestly, you'll be driving a 911, so it'll be a blast whichever engine you put it in. It's a win win situation really.

I'm in that boat too

Hell, I got three 1 or 2R cases, cranks, rods, heads, two MFI pumps... and I don't own a 911 even (ok, so a 912 is sorta close). I even have the hots for a RS gas tank. Just make sure you don't fall into the 'lighting' thing that kenik fell into. Spooky stuff.

Hey ID my first car at age 16 was a 1982 Rabbit. Loved that car, actually got a bit teary eyed when i traded it for a lousy, no soul 4 cyl. mustang. It was gas, 4spd, 4dr, mint greenish, sunroof....man what a great first car that was. i didn't realize just how damn cool it was really.

Yeah, I love my Rabbit. Everyone gives me $hit about it, seeing as I have nicer cars I could be driving, but 55 mpg is pretty enticing these days. Mine's a 2dr., 5spd white with blue interior.

There is no substitute for cubic centimeters, especially on the street, MFI or Webers.

i have both. all most. i have a 69e and a 72t. for daily driving the t is great. low end torque and 4 speed that will launch you. if you want a race car get the e. the top end performance is so much better than the t. it drives like a race car. the only draw back is the tranny. the t will launch off the line but the e dosen't get going till you get in to 2nd gear.
