Cam Questions for 3.2
The valve guides need to be replaced in my 1987 Carrera. The car has 42,000 miles.
While the engine is out and the heads are off I want to do the following: New studs New rod bolts Stiffer springs Replace cams with something better. The engine has the following mods. Back dated exhaust using SSIs Cat removed Dynamax exhaust Steve Wong Chip What type of cams do I need? The car is a daily driver,(I have owned it for the last 2.5 years and have put 24, 000 miles on it.) I would like more power. How much could I expect? |
You'll be very limited in cam choices with the stock motronic dome pistons. I believe the '964' grind is about the limit. It is a modest increase in lift and duration. You would see some gain in HP/TQ. You'll still have to check valve to piston contact.
Anything more aggressive will require different pistons /dome configuration. At this point (as someone here said well) it is a very slippery slope $$ on upgrades. |
Si Banker,
Give John a call at www.drcamshafts.com he will guide you on what the best grind would be for what you want to achieve. There are many threads about this also. Steve Wong would be able to tell you the pros and cons of different configurations. I am rebuilding my engine and have gone to 3.4 P&C's with John's DC22 cam with his performance valve springs on my 88 Carrera. I have the euro pre muff and a Steve W chip on mine. Sending the chip into Steve to get it programmed for the mods I have done. Can't tell you how it will be as I'm am still rebuilding. I wanted to go as aggressive as I could. It is a street driver and some DE's, auto cross. |

What could I expect in HP gains by going to the new cams? Also what could I expect if I went the 3.4 route in HP gains.
What would the 3.4 do to drive-ability and would there be a increase in oil temp> I have to deal with the Texas summers. |
about 10 degrees higher - with the 3.4 - actually the 3.4 acts JUST like the 3.2 until you get into the higher RPM's = :)

oh - I have the motronic 3.4 P & C's - and 993 SS cams. Had to relief the piston tops .5mm on the exhaust side - but she runs like a scalded cat...

I am hoping for a 30 to 40 hp increase over stock. Worked with Henry and Camgrinder on the configuration and came up with those HP increase expectations. I didn't do a dyno before so I will never know for sure how much but I am going to dyno to fine tune the chip. Supertech has a very affordable 3.4 upgrade or getting your cylinders bored and replated, then use JE pistons. If I only had more money :D
