Oil pressure warning (pre-69)

How is the oil pressure warning or "idiot" light function wired on a stock 68' 911 (or any 65-68 car)? Our host shows an "oil pressures switch" for that model year but the factory workshop manuals show no switch. From what I can tell there are only 2 senders on pre 69 motors: oil pressure, at the back of the case near the crankcase breather and oil temperature at the front of the case just under the fan near the serial number.

Ken, there is no low oil pressure light on an SWB, only the handbrake warning lamp at the top and the alternator warning lamp at the bottom. There is no pressure switch or wire for one in the factory diagram. The low oil pressure light is a later addition that uses a sender with dual prongs on it. On my '71 race car I have a separate switch that is plumbed off the cam oil lines to run an adjustable switch from Smart Racing Products.

Thanks John! That's what it looked like to me but why do all the parts houses sell them! Even our host sells a 65-68 oil pressure warning light sender!

Ken,

Mostly because the parts system often does not differentiate between the individual models of 911. You often see parts listed as "fits 1965-1989" by the unknowing! Makes it a PITA when you are looking for something specific.

Ahh, I think I know. That part you referenced is for the 911/TU/L. These cars didn't come with an oil pressure gauge so they would have the light instead.

John,

Maybe ROW? My US spec 68' 911L is original and came with an oil pressure gauge. It might not have the idiot light though, that I will have to check. I'm assuming it doesn't.

Also was surprised when I found out that my 73 T did not have an oil idiot light (just the pressure gauge). The factory wiring diagrams do not even show an idiot light, pressure switch or related wiring. First thing was to install a pressure switch (next to oil thermostat) and a large idiot light replacing the clock. I'm afraid many owners drive around relying on a none-existing red light to save their engine.
