Long block done. CIS? Ughh.
I hit the longblock milestone this week and am really excited.
Today, I dragged the FI out of the corner (and the poor molested wiring harness) and damn it looks like utter crap. I don't know if I have the wherewithall to refurbish it or not. I mena, holy rat's nest Batman. I know I can do it, but... (plus I already have parts for it). So, what are the rought costs associated with going to a different fuel injection (back to carbs or forward). I have and older crankfire coil unit to reuse and I have to make a new harness anyway. Or maybe I should tackle the CIS anyway, you know, so I can say I've done that! BTW, its a 3.2SS with 964 cams. I know some will say to go with a different cam and such and such am FI system, but I am set with leaving the block intact and going forward with what I have now. ( I want to drive it this year!) Thanks for any suggestions. Please don't push me off the money cliff too fast! |
Pics, we need pics!! :) congrats on the long block!

Jeff, you were one of the many who helped me get this far, so thank you!

Why not just go with a Bitz EFI system? You have half the parts already with the CIS.
|
Do you have a link to more info on that?
|
Ask and you shall receive. You'll be shocked that the kit is cheaper than used Webers:

The wire harnesses do get hard and brittle after many years, but I think that you will find if you spend a few hours with it, it's not too difficult to replicate and clean up...

The Blitz system looks pretty good for the price. Have you used/installed it? Has anyone else? What are the downsides?
Maybe I should do a search! Wayne, which parts of the harness are generally salvagable, or more importantly, which parts do I need to salvage because they can't be purchased? |
I also suppose I could sell some of the CIS parts to go towards that system. Fuel distributor, for example. Anything else? How much is a used fuel dist. worth? It is a Euro 1978 911SC.

I know these guys also have it for sure Noah (pelican moderator) flipper And I am sure a bunch more just not sure there pelican names |
Tony replied to my email that the ECU does not come configured from coilpacks. Has anyone done this with coils and if so, was it difficult to configure? I don;t really want to have software issues when I start up this rebuild if I can help it.

Wow, those pics look really great.
I noticed you have an engine stand-adapter different from the one shown in Wayne's books; what exactly do you use to connect to the engine's gearbox flange ? |
Its the engine bracket made by Mainley. It bolts to the transmission connecting studs same as the Porsche tool and then it bolts to a universal stand. It cost significantly less than the P tool and works just as well.

Brian,
Nice engine!! I notice that you will be going with a different ignition system(sensor pulley). Which one? I am putting together a similar engine using a 78 3.0 core, but, using a 74.4 mm crank from a 3.3 turbo and 95mm JEs with 9.5 CR and John D's 964 grind cams. I am thinking of going with the XDI ignition and CIS(for the time being). What type of paint did you use for the valve covers. They look great. I will be putting the short block together tomorrow night. (hope everything goes well). I look forward to more progress reports. Cheers, Michel |
