Tectyl -- Before and After
I figured I'd share some pictures and comments about protecting my case and transaxle from the environment. As a recap, these will be going into a race car. The case was machined by Walt at Competition Engineering and sitting safely wrapped up in a garbage bag over the last year. The transaxle was from either a 911 or a 914 box that I picked last year also. The crank case is as delivered from Walt, while I cleaned up the transaxle myself in my parts washer using "unscented" mineral spirits. I started to get concerned when the transaxle starting developing corrosion just a few weeks after getting cleaned. So I grabbed a can of WD40 and hosed it down which took care of that. Before applying the Tectyl, I did clean the transaxle again using mineral spirits to get the WD40 off of it.
First before. Everything looking beautifully flat gray. ![]() Now after slapping on some Tectyl which I bought from our host. It's also available in spray cans, but I figured I'd get a gallon and use a brush. ![]() Since the objective was to completely encapulate the exposed surfaces, I wasn't as concerned about runs and puddles as making sure that no gray was showing through. Once this dries for a day or two, I'll go back and WD40 the insides of everything to make sure that no corrosion starts there prior to filling them up with lubricants.

Very nice, John, but you'd better hit those license plate bolts with a spot of Tectyl, too.

I have two of the green plates, but one of them has seen too many winters, and will probably have to retire soon. I still cannot get used to the red and blue ones. I guess if I'm driving a 30 year old sports car, I must be a traditionalist.

Less brakes, more gas!

John!
Keep that green plate... else you MUST have one on the front. Greens are exempt, as you know, from the required front plate... it just ruins the view IMHO. -Michael, who is happy living in FL now where no front plate is required...

Nice!
I was going to give you a hard time about your first on-track experience having five reverse gears and one forward but I see that you have not only removed the ring and pinion but have a beefy intermediate plate there as well. I didn't know I could buy Tectyl from Pelican. Now if I can just get free shipping.
