79 SC cylinder head removal problem
I am trying to repair broken head studs. Chain cover off, tensioner off, head studs nuts off. What are the steps to get head off?
Do I have to take off the 4 nuts of chain box, and/or large nut off cam to take sprocket off in order to get head off? are their any shorcuts or tips? after I took the chain tensioner off I thought the chain would be loose enough to remove head, but there is also pressure blocks that seem to be holding chain. After I redo heads and studs will I have a problem getting timing right on cams? PS, I dont know if I might have movedthe Z1 mark upon disassembly. The Haynes book isn't much help. thanks. |
Unfortunatly you have to take the engine down further. The sprokets have to come off and the cams have to come out so the rockers have to come out. You can keep the heads attached to the cam housings though. You can leave the chain boxes on the engine as well. You may have trouble timing the cams if you can't figure it out. I'd get a better book than the Haynes manual. There are also many good threads on cam timing here.

get wayne's book. you can remove the chain housing after gutting it, then remove the 3 heads and cam tower as a unit, complete with cam/rockers. reassemble the same way.

...and a typical mistake is to remove the cam chain housings and then the visible nuts on the camshaft housings and wonder why the heads won't come off...
...there are two nuts under each rocker assembly that also bolt to the heads. That's why the cams and rockers must come out. |
He doesn't need to remove any nuts from the cam housings. The heads can stay attached to the cam housing and removed together.
