98mm P&Cs for the 930........Mahle the only way to go?
$4,000 for Mahle 98mm P&Cs........is there another way?

I like the above mentioned option very well and can be secured well under $4k.
Check also with Henry as he has brought out some options. PELICAN sells Nickies and in my opinion, this is the "best" that technology will buy you, though it won't save you money on the front side. |
I have nickies on my high hp engine. They are in a different league than the mahle stuff

I've got Henry's (Supertec) 98MM on mine...stay tuned, I just finished wiring up the twin plug ignition and should be good to start the engine tomorrow.

You need to consider the cylinders made by JB Racing. Steel sleeves, with AL fins. They all but eliminate blow by on forced induction motors, allow you to use any rings (like molly), work extremely well with JE pistons (no taper like Mahle cylinders), can be made to precisely fit any piston/ring combination and are race proven. Oh yah, they are reasonably priced (unlike Mahles right now).

Can someone expalain a nickie vs. a Mahle?

The mahle (and every other nikasil cylinder) is a cast piece. The Nickies are a billet cylinder made from our proprietary extruded aluminum alloy into which the fins are cut. The biggest difference between our aluminum and other is the strength (+66%) and thermal conductivity (+100%). The drawback is the price, as we have LOTS of machining time and scrap (each cylinder starts off as a 17# slug then becomes a 1-2lb cylinder). The other difference are the expansion rates (our alloy has less silicon), so it expands more, allowing for tighter ring gaps while reducing ring wear and a better fit (tigher clearances) with JE Pistons.
That said, I'd love to sell them to every customer that calls or walks in the door, but in some cases they are not necessary, unless you want something that will outlive your Porsche and your engine rebuild :-) |
I really wanted to do either the Nickies or the JBs, but I honesly just ran out of $$$$! For my purposes (a daily driven 930 with a .8 BAR Tial wastegate) that the Supertec cylinders with JE pistons will be fine. I figured that at least they're new (not replated), and have the cooling fins on top, so that's at least better than what I had...

Agreed :-) Those half-finned cylinders are horrible.

Cost no object - go with the nickies - next notch down (but plenty of high HP engined under their best) JBracing. With a turbo, especially a tracked turbo, that is what I would do.

What objective evidence is there that the 'nickies' are better for a track situation than the Mahles? Not a challenge, just a question.

I have just bought Henry/Supertec's P&C as well. Will be at least a few weeks before I have the car back together to know any results.
But, if service is anything - the first shipment I received had a broken fin. Could be UPS or anything. No quesions asked - Henry said to return it & he'll send a replacement set & deal with the damage on his end. Now, that's service in my mind! What swung me over was price & as Sandman said, its better than the replated ones. I can't justified new Mahle/Nickies yet. |
Craig, were the ones in your motor new when it was rebuilt? Not a glowing recommendation for Mahle.......
