Rocker Arm Adjustment Screws

I am in the process of disassenbling the engine to replace broken head studs (1983 SC). I have removed the chain tensioners. I am just about to remove the cam sprockets and am following the guidance in Wayne's book by backing off on all of the adjustment screws to free up the rockers. I have moved all of the screws out to their max postition but I still have contact (no free play at all) in 3 of the rockers arms. They are tight against the cam lobes.

I would assume that I would be able to get free play in all of the rockers?? I have hit resistance and don't want to back out too much and pop the foot off the screw.

Any advise would be most appreciated.
Rick

The cam lobes or big enough where you can not back off the adjustment screws and have free play in all the cylinders. Look, the ones that are still tight our on the cam lobes more than likely, some times the adjustment screws our worn where they will not back out all the way even so it will not hurt your work. Good luck, there is really no mystery to these engines it is all square peg in square whole stuff which hopefully with a little help you will go through and then the mystery will be gone and it is just a device a little more complicated than a shovel

Depending on where the crankshaft is in it's rotation it is quite possible for that to occur. Spin the crank by hand, GENTLY and see if they free up a little.

I never had to time the cams in a shovel.

Thank you both for the good suggestions.

I was looking at the engine and the cams last night and my crankshaft pulley is sitting at about 10 degrees before Z1. It looks like if I rotate this to Z1 it will provide some clearance to allow the remainder of the rocker arms to free up.

I am assuming that I can rotate the crank/cams without the tensioners intalled?? I am guessing that I will have to apply a little tension to the chains on the one side? Otherwise, I will have to reinstall the tensioners.

You can rotate without the tensioners, just pull on the chains so they don't get bunched up.
