ok to do leakdown cold?

The short version of the question - can I do the leak down test after pulling the engine...will be cold and not warm in that case.

In the process of trying to find the vibration I've been checking the compression. The first time if checked a few days ago, I got numbers like 125-130 with the engine slightly warm and throttle closed. This time doing it again with engine quite warm and throttle open and looking at the gage this time. Getting a lot of 120-125psi. The variation is not too bad. These numbers seem low. I need to find my notebook with the numbers just after top end rebuild and see what I had...I think I remember 150's.

Also, I'm now pulling the engine out...can I do a leak down test with the engine cold .... after pulling it out?

I hope I don't have something like...all the rings are shot after 7k miles...they are new with cylinders/pistons/rings buffed up by Jerry Woods and Co.

The oil looked very clean very little debris on the mag. plugs.

Thanks,

-Henry

What dispalcement and cams? These affect expected values. These values would not strike me as odd on a small displacement, 'S' cammed motor.

sorry I didn't give particulars...3.2 stock 1989 motor with 964 grind cams..no other mods, heads and cylinders not fly cut...done with motor fairly warm....in the process of finding/borrowing a leakdown tester...to check things out..

Why are you pulling the motor out?

hcoles 06-03-2006 08:08 AM

pulling motor out because of vibration...see other thread....harsh noise on deaccel....most noticable at around 2600rpm

motor and tranny is now out...

I hope I find something wrong with flywheel/clutch area parts.

I think you will find your numbers are just fine if all about even...trying to decide on "if" high enough (cr) with a gauge might be abstract for a whole lot of reasons like the one above (cam).....static is not what is really happening in there.
