Unhappy is steel spring clutch disc supposed to have loose springs?

This is part of my ongoing quest to find a vibration. This morning pulled the engine and tranny. Car is a 89 3.2 with a steel spring clutch disc. I think they call it a 75-76 turbo model clutch disc...it is what a lot of people use instead of replacing with a new rubber spring clutch.

On the disc there are 2 "thin" springs and 4 "thick" springs. The 4 "thick" springs have play and look to have been vibrating and spinning for sometime.

Are these thick springs supposed to have play or should they all be tight? Clutch was installed new about 5k ago during top end rebuild and vibration has slowly got worse starting at not noticable.

I really hope this is the root cause of the vibration problem, because I didn't have any other issues to be seen.

Thanks much,

-Henry

Springs should be 'loose' or float in the hub assy. The springs absorb radial loads making for a smooth engagement.

What vibration issues are you talking about specifically?

the vibration is the same one I've been talking about on "harsh noise on deacceleration" thread. Now the vibration is somewhat felt/heard on acceleration and mostly felt/heard on deaccel.

JW Workshop said the springs can be turned so .. 2 are tight and the 4 big springs are loose I guess or looser.

thanks,
-Henry

sounds more like a transmission issue. G50s do have a gear rattle at low RPMs which is normal. harsh noise on decel could be a worn bearing that allows end play in the pinion shaft.

John,
Since by process of elimination and what you say...that seems the most likely source. Would worn pinion bearing make a sound/vibration that is almost only present at 2650rpm or at least has a defniate peak around that rpm?

I have the low speed rattle and now that I think about it the rattle seems to be more persistant and needs higher and higher speeds to go away.
I seems sort of tight to turn turn the input shaft...but this could be normal also I feel no play on the input shaft to the trans.

Is it difficult for my mechanic to go in and check this pinion bearing?

Thanks much for the help...

As a side note..now inspecting the valve lash/etc. The oil seals on the rocker shafts don't work..I'm getting some seeping. Will take out clean and retorque...hopefully it was just a bunch of assembly lube that leaked out...I don't think so. As I've said before I don't like the rocker shaft setup. The threads that mention to torque more than the book are probably correct.

HI just check the flywheel while you have it in bits, is it dual-mass or turbo???

not sure if dual-mass...it is what looks like a standard flywheel setup and then a fairly big pressure plate assembly. I'll probably have it balance checked today...

this is not likely the root cause...as the noise/vibration has slowly increase with time... but I'll probably have it checked
