				cams hardenning chipped

When I pulled the cams out I noticed that on one lobe of each cam I had about 1/8" square in area of delamination of the hardening. Does anyone know if this type of damage can be repaired? Has anyone else had this problem? Has Porsche had a bad batch of cams gone through do you think? Could this be a lubrication issue? (I use 25W50 Valvoline GP50 and this has been the lube before I got the car) although there is no signs of scuffing on the other lobes or rockers. Any opinions appreciated.

This seems to be common. The cams can be reconditioned and should be fine after. You need to recondition the rockers as well so they wear together. -Andy

I have the same thing on 3 exhaust and 2 intake lobes on the 2 cams. They have 235,000 kms on them. I will just run it for another couple of years (only 10 - 15,000 kms) and then redo the cams with new rockers. As I understand it, there is a good place in California that reconditions (weld and regrind) the cams.

If the engine has lots of miles, I could say that it is normal wear and tear, but we've seen lots of cam problems in the last few years, as the EPA has mandated a reduction or elimination of ZDDP from motor oils. Most definately it could be a lubrication problem, but it might not be the sole cause of the wear. Also proper break in has lots to do with wear patterns and accumulated wear.

you may want to check the cost of shipping compared to issues with unproven cam repair shop... of course if there is a guy that really knows these cams and cam fix in Sydney...by all means.
