79 SC dissassembly question

head stud nuts off, cam nut off, tensioner off, chain loose, sprocket loose, Im trying to pull 3 heads and cam assembly off and it wont come off , but its loose.
1. do I have to take off cam end cover(3 bolts)
2. do I have to take off brown plastic chain rubbing block
(what holds it on)?

Yeah I know , read Waynes book. Ive got it on order but it wont be here for another week.
I have 4 broken lower studs I have to replace- any help appreciated!

Hello, Wil.

My advice is to strip the engine slowly and fully at each stage.

Short cuts will lead to tears before bedtime!

So you need to remove evry single rocker arm, all the cams and associated parts, then the carriers, and finally the heads.

Kind regards
David

You do need to remove the rockers and cams, but you can leave the cam carrier on the heads and remove them as one unit. If you're planning to send the heads out for a valve job, you might as disassemble the whole thing and take off each head individually.

I have done this operation many times.

The advantage of removing the carrier firts is that the heads can be worked on singly..thye often stick to the cylinder quite hard..

its just quicker and much less likely to damage anything..

Kind regards
