piston rings or new pistons

There ar a number of suppliers for new piston rings for 2.0L 911E engines. There ar very few suppliers for new pistons/cylinders, and they are very expensive!
When are new pistonrings an option?

New rings are required when A)Worn to the point past acceptable leakdown attributed to the rings and or the pistons themselves. B) Excessive heat through friction where the spring tension has been lost.

Just replacing piston rings is an option if your cylinders and pistons still measure within specification. This link should give you some more info: Checking cylinders

Hello, prutzer.

The usual reason to scrap these pistons is the top ring groove wear.

It is usual for these grooves to be out of spec in over half the engines I have seen.

It is of course quite common for people to try to ignore this and just rering..it often works, for a short while..ultimately the ring will break.

Remember the costs in labour time and parts to just take the motor apart, clean it properly, and rebuild it..and you will find the cost of new pistons becomes economic IMHO.

Plus, you have the opportunity to raise the CR, use a lighter more modern design (NB JE pistons are actually heavier and IMHO inferior to the original Mahle 69 S piston), and hva valve pockets which will accommodate a more modern cam profile..

Kind regards
David

I'm with DavidPPP, on the top ring groove spec. I just went through this with my 2.0. I also opted for the JE piston option.

Measure everything, ie gap, ring side clearance, piston skirt to cylinder. If everything is within spec then go with the option of installing new rings. I like the Total Seal ring packs.
good luck,
