Pull the motor and get a look at the valves and pistons crowns. That's where to start.

Yes, it is. By top end to you mean towers, heads and P/Cs? Or just heads?

HI was it a over RPM or engine failed, either way at least change the rod bolts, good luck

If you want to turn it around in time for your next event or something, it only takes a few days to get the heads done. I use Atlantic Enterprises in NJ (856 589-5577).

Mike couldn't be more right.
Even if there was no piston the valve contact, an overrev is always a good reason to replace rod bolts (ARP can be reused) and rebuild the rods. Obviously replace the rod bearings.

Many years ago I allowed a customer to talk himself out of doing the rods after an overrev and after the engine was reassembled top end only he got 87 miles before a catastrophic failure.
Another customer with a two liter vintage racer overrevved his engine on Saturday pulled the valve cover that night, did a leak down and adjusted the valves. Good leak down and him racer buddies told him he could run it (against my advice) and on Sunday by midday he had a "magic window" in his case.
