Head studs Timeserts Question
 
If Henry Schmidt or Mike at MBEngineering is in there I'd appreciate your opinion. I've got the old thread drilled out with the timesert drill, and the next step is counter sink the hole with the counterbore tool

1. How do you use the counterbore tool when the piston spigot is in the way

2. Do you start the counterbore tool carefully letting the tool machine the aluminum away from the spigot until it gets deep enough to reach the block?

3. How bout maybe mark a half circle on the spigot with a magic marker, then grind a small half circle away with a Dremel with a carbide burr till it's flush at case level, then go ahead with counterbore tool.

I would use a CaseSaver over a TimeSert every time. That said : I would install the timesert, if that was all I had, without using the counter sink tool. There is no need for the TimeSert
to be flush with the case surface.
I would trim the TimeSert with a lathe (a grinder will work as well to minimize the diameter of the TimeSert. Be careful not to remove the whole collar.
Using the installation tool you can now insert the sleeve to the correct depth with any damage to the spigot.

Any chance you can get this done with a milling machine? I worked on a 911 motor once where someone had Timeserted the head studs by hand. Looked like a Porcupine with studs going every whichway.

HI i have a spair counter sink tool which i have put in the lath and turned the outside to let the tool go past the cylinder spigot and let the insert fit OK. if you just have the 1 to do, start the tap to put the threads in (only to hold it's self in the case) and remove the tap holder, then pop the cylinder back on to check the tap is square, if it's OK in a little more and recheck.
