Engine Stand Adapter Ring

Has anyone use just the fastener that comes with an engine stand? Did it damage any part of the motor? What can't I do with the motor if I do not use a Porsche Engine Adaptor Ring?

John, the adapter ring uses just two engine/transmission studs to hold the engine and it's design helps to support the weight of the engine when doing so. Remember we're working with alum/mag here. The reason for this two bolt design is to allow you to separate the case halves when you get to that stage.

I'm not going to split the case.
Is it OK to use the four bolts to attached to the motor?

NONONONONONONO! Unless you want to strip the stud holes in your case and have it hit the floor with a sickening thud. It will mate, but the fixture uses the half crescent piece to support the weight of the motor. Do you really want the entire motor hanging its weigh off of 4 threaded holes?

YES! YES! YES! I have rebuilt 3 engines on an American engine stands,2 3.0l and a 3.2l, with no problem whatsoever. All I did was trim two washer per stud to clear the lip that the engine case has on the rear mating surface (see pictures). You want to distribute the load through the washers and then to the case, not on the lip.

You just need to plan ahead if you intend to remove flywheel since you can't get it out when the eng is on the stand, so do it before you put the eng on the stand. And the case can be split and put back together with no problem...

Pictures included...

I'd be more apt to try it on an aluminum engine, but never on magnesium. Since his is aluminum, it's his call. That said, since I own a fixture, I'd never try it.

I have also taking apart a 2.7l engine from my recently bought '76 (first 2 pixs). Engine was shot so I used a 3.0l Euro instead. Engine on stand included complete FI system and SSIs on a 7R mag case.

My old 3.0l engine was complete, FI, SSIs and a Monty muffler.

Certainly his call but it would never stop me from working on my engines... Lou

You're taking apart a VERY expensive piece of machinery that you are probably about to spend thousands more dollars on. Why not spend the $150 for the right tools? I also prefer the U shaped engine stands. Less chance of tipping it over.

Just my .02

2nd that one.....heck even ZDMACK tools has specials now and then where the separate adaptor ring goes for a tad over $100, which can them be bolted easily to a standard engine stand if you don't have the whole adaptor webbbing.

last thing i want is a fully dressed ~$15K+ 3.3/3.6L turbo engine dropping 3 feet to a concrete floor. turbo engines are heavy and stupid expensive.......

If you are in San Diego, you're free to borrow mine.

I've held an SC engine like this with no problems. I think I had to grind a little off the arm where it contacted the engine so it wouldn't damage the lip that the tranny centers on.

I wouldn't do it with a turbo engine or mag case.

John-
I live in the East Bay and have a U-shaped stand and an adapter ring. You are welcome to borrow the stand and adapter.

Thanks JP911,
I would love to BORROW your adaptor and stand but I don't know when I'll finish my rebuild.
This is my first engine rebuild so I'm going a bit slow.
Also, I have a 11 months baby girl (A real cutie) so that will cut into my rebuilding time.
