964 rebuild complete (finally)
Well, after the second go-round to re-tighten the ARP rod bolts, the rebuild is finally done. Power is GREAT. Runs like a champ. Only issue is that I've got a bad bearing or something in the fan/alt. Turns out that was the source of the knock. I'm glad I redid the rod bolts anyway, they really needed it - when removing the nuts, some released after 90 degrees, some after 45. Using a stretch gauge and torque-angle method on a vise, Tyson and I determined it's 5 foot pounds + 135 degrees of turn to get .012" stretch. Way more than 45 or 90 degrees which was the range on my first install. Also a handy thing to know if you ever need to put on rods without splitting the case - which is what I did the second time around. Sorry I didn't take a lot of good pics, but here is what I got...

Evening of July 4th
Well, not quite finished that night - had half shafts, blower and ducting, exhaust and heat shields left. Jeez my elbows and shoulders were shot!

Congratulations!
Did you install the motor/trannt alone? Regards, |
I took it out alone, but that's because it's easy to get the perch just right and have it perfectly balanced, but since I don't have the jackstand bracket/adapter thingy, getting it from the engine stand to balanced just right on the jack is very hard. So I did get a little help putting it back in.
