930 engine question

Just changed the oil on my 86 930 engine and noticed it doesn't have a flat sump plate like my 79 930 ROW engine. What's up with that ?? When did they change over ???

Mid 1983 the case was changed to eliminate a major source of oil leaks. The need to remove the sump screen during oil changes was overrated and deemed unnecessary so the screen was permanently attached to the pump.
Some people thought the change was made to strengthen the case but I would argue that the sump plate adds strength to the bottom of the earlier case giving it equal rigidity.
