How much HP can you get out of a 3.2

I'm in the planning stages of rebuilding my race motor, which is all stock except for open headers and has 150K miles. My question is, is it realistic to get 300hp out of a 3.2 with Motronic? If so how?

Inital plans:
Engine case machine work recommend in Wayne's rebuild book.
Paulter rods
J&E Pistons (10.5:1???)
head work
cams???

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid increasing displacement.

If you plan on stock displacement and are after 300hp+ you'd have to ditch the stock motronic and go to carbs or aftermarket EFI to allow for big cams and compresssion that would be needed.

If you really want the lazy 3.2 to come to life, you can extract an easy 340-360HP from your 3.2L with a low boost (0.5bar) bolt-on turbo-kit.

All you need is the right Motronic CHIP and a boost sensitive fuel press regulator

Got to keep my eye on the classifications, so no turbo.

I always though 100hp per liter also. So it "should" be able to make a max of 320hp.

well...100hp/L if u stay within the realm of reason.

more is defiently do-able.... look at henry's (supertecs) 2.8L....its making more then 100hp/L....

there are other examples also...hondas F20a in the s2000....
lots of cycles....

and i'm sure theres lots of other examples...problem is just reliablity.....and that seem to presently peak around 95-100hp/L

cheers
Nick

3.2 power

We have some short stroke big bore 3.2 race engines that are making 365-370 at the crank.
I have a 3.0 on the dyno now that made 356hp with carbs these engines will run 50 hours with out any mistakes
Just finished an HSR 2.5 with 46mm carbs that made just over 306 hp. these are carefully built race motors that are not cheap to build.

You guys should really read what his question asks and not go off on wild tangents with motors and modifications that do not even remotely apply to him...

The short answer is no way for a normally aspirated application.

However, 80hp/liter is VERY doable for a 3.2L using Motronic and will last in miles rather than hours...

Those of you speculating that you can get 100hp/liter on a 3.2L Motronic based motor are either clueless, dreaming or have a very optimistic dyno.

So the short answer -

wild cams and carbs - maybe

3.2 and Motronic - very unlikely

Hey Mike, I'm Pablo's brother and one of Sid's pit crew. I will be talking to you guys when I'm ready for some machine work. I believe I spoke with you or someone in your shop about a 944 cup racer I'm also building. Right now, I'm trying to plan my route and start buying the expensive (rods, pistons, turbo oil pump...). But I only want to buy things once, so I do extensive research (and become a PITA to many).

Yes, I am talking about a RELIABLE race motor. My goal is to do sprint races next year and I want to concentrate on the Homestead 12hrs the year after.

3.2

Armando, I spoke to you about the 944 a few weeks ago. When you are ready let me know I can help you with both.

I think it is possible to get close. I have customers who have 3.2 Motronic motors, and dynoed around 240 rwhp SAE corrected on a Dynojet, which with a 15% tranny correction factor, works out to around 280 engine hp. These motors were nothing that were overly extraordinary, and were done basically with 10.5:1 CR pistons, race fuel, big headers, an open racing exhaust, and cams. Had these cars had a MAF system, Extrude Honed manifolds, and some supertrick stepped headers, I'm sure at least another 10-15 hp could be achieved.

This was a custom built motor by Dave B. of TRE Motorsports. Notice the extension of power past 6000 that really doesn't fall off. Excellent for the track where the required powerband is between 4700 and 7000:

This was another 3.2 motor by a guy who asked to remain anonymous because he's basically been kicking a lot of ass on the track, including 964s and 993s.

Before remapping my euro 3.2 with 993 Supercup Cams and SSIs + M&K muffler made 260 fwhp on a DynoDynamics dyno. SW's remapped chip will add a further 5-10fwhp hopefully when I am back at the same dyno in September. My curves look very similar to the ones SW posted.

If you added bigger headers and a late 964 plastic intake - better than extrude honed 3.2 intake - you might get to 280fwhp. SW sent me a link to a controller for the resonance flap on the 964 intake so you can continue to use the 3.2 management system. FWIW, 9M in the UK have a carefully assembled and blueprinted 3.2 with SSIs and MOTEC management making a claimed 275hp with std cams.

So 280hp certainly seems possible on Motronic.
