Used Reinz O-rings. Do I need to change them??
Hi,
I rebuld my engine (2.2) a couple of months ago and used the standard Reinz Gasket kit including the Blue O-rings. While reading a couple of threads on this topic, I now worry about whether I should replace them for the green o-rings. My engine has not been run yet, since I can't run it in due to body restoration. If these o-rings are replaced, can you do it bolt per bolt, without damaging the web sealing? Is there another option to prevent leaks? ( Use dirko to cover the bolts) Thanks for your valuable advise!! Hessel |
If your cylinders are on the engine you won't be able to replace the O-rings without removing them. The bolts won't come out.
I don't use the blue O-rings but some of my friends have and they haven't leaked. You'll have to decide your tolerance for risk and make your decision. -Andy |
You're fairly committed at this point.... Just keep the blue ones. I've used them many times successfully, never had them leak.

would you tell me the right procedure for through bolts torqueing.. i understand i have to avoid the washers to turn while doing the job, but not easy alone...well my engine is sealed right now, i've noticed some turned a bit during operation, should i remove one to check if the o rings aren't crushed, how do you do guys...

lube the threads, hold the bolt head and torque the nut. the blue ones will probably be ok 99% of the time. the green ones are tougher is all. sometimes you see little bits of blue squeezed out between washer and case. kind of makes you wonder. that's why i use the green ones.

Can anyone quickly tell me what size the green ones are?
Thanks Alan |
right, i've firmly held the bolt heads, i've used the green viton's, i've lubed the thread, i don't see bits of material, but the washers have sometimes turned a bit... should be right ...
alan : the green are stronger to install, don't now the size, they seem to be a very little bigger than the porsche red ones ( tore diameter) |
In a perfect world you can have somone grip the washers with a pair of pliers so they don't turn as you torque them down, works great.
