2.2T to 2.4 OR 2.7 CIS??

So i've come to a decision point & could do with your advice.
Bear in mind whichever motor I choose this will be a simple refresh build & its my 1st time.

Choices are re-build my 71 2.2T with a 2.4/2.7 crank & maybe E cams. Essentially turning it into a 2.4 E

Or pickup a disassembled 74 2.7 CIS, re-build with Webbers & maybe swap to a mild cam.

Cost will be a big factor, plus reliability of motor out other side. Of course more power & torque would be nice. Main use will be in a AX car with some DE days for fun.

BTW what might the expected power & torque curves be for the two motors?

Rebulding your 2.2 to 2.4 specs would give you 2.4E power provided you get the ports right and can get the pistons to work with the longer stroke. About 160HP.

Building the 2.7 might be more expensive because the case will need more work (Case savers). If you use solex cams and webbers you might get 200 HP out of it. You might have problems with piston to valve clearance however. If you can use an SC cam profile you should not have clearace problems and still get close to 200 HP out of it with the right porting.

Rebuilding your 'T' with a 2.4 crank will yield a CR bump of about half a point, which is good. E cams are nice and can be had cheaply. I'd do the 2.4E route since it would be so much cheaper, but still very fun to drive.

What needs to be confirmed is in what shape the 2.7 case is in. Also find out if it's a magnesium case or aluminum. If the case is in good shape, and you have the Webers, all you need are cams and pistons, and those will definitely make your 2.7 more powerful than the 2.4. Heck, if you just rebuild the motor as is, and put Webers on it, you might have 175 to 180 hp engine right then and there.
