Case preparation for rebuild

I am to the stage where i have things ready for preparation for complete rebuild.

3.0 to 3.2SS

What things are a good idea to do to the case as far as preperation for reassembly? Ideally I would like a sparkling clean case with no surprises from the case while reassembly.

Acid wash? machinework? Oil squirters/passages.

First read Wayne's book. Then search this site. It is loaded with information. Then you will need to find a reputable machine shop in your area. That should get you started.

I dipped my case for cleaning... didn't work out the way I needed it to.

Hot Soak Thread

Then I basically used 00 steel wool on the outside and non-machined surfaces. Lots of elbow grease.

I did see a case that looked like it was brand new. Ollies has a media tumbling method (NOT blasting) that makes it look like it just came off the final machining center at Porsche. Its amazing. Only $100 + $130 to clean out all the media and replace all the gally plugs etc... They also do good machine work so you may find your all-in-one solution there...

I'd be very careful about using steel wool or media blasting my case. There are lots of oil passages that could harbor bits of steel wool or media beeds and that could ruin your new engine.

I just clean the outside in a parts washer and try to keep dirt from going in any of the passages. Then spray out the oil passages with brake cleaner or carb cleaner.
