P&C options for a 2.7 rebuild
The time is approaching....400 miles to a quart of oil, dirty, old, leaks, 104,000 miles, etc. I plan on doing a stock rebuild of my '74 911S 2.7. I'll do the teardown and reassembly. The only "performance" upgrades I plan on implementing are SSI's and a M&K muffler.
One of the biggest price tags are new Mahle P&C's. Are there any other options that would save me a few $ and work just as well? Thanks (upfront notice: I don't want to substitute a used 3.0 or 3.2) |
Why do you need new cylinders? If they are in spec, rehone and rering and you are done. Wait for the teardown before jumping to worst-case conclusions.

Fidalgo,
I would do a teardown and determine what you have for cylinders and pistons. Most folks agree if the cylinders are nikasil, chances are good they can be reused. Maybe even the pistons. The same folks also agree if the cylinders are alusil, chances are good they are junk. Pistons too. Since you are in Washington, I would call John Walker in Seattle (206-789-6800) to see if he can get you a set of cylinders and pistons, if you need them. He could also look at what you have. They may be fine. May just need a quick spin with a grape hone and new rings. Henry Schmidt from Supertec in California (760-728-3062) may have 2.7 sets as well. Don't forget Steve Weiner at Rennsport in Portland, (503-244-0990). These guys are tops and they will help with whatever you need. I would plan on getting the valves and guides done at the same time. If the oil pressure is running low, less than 1 bar per 1,000 rpm, it might be time to split the case. The Mahles are the best, but you do have choices. Personally, if you can keep the car down for a couple weeks, I would tear it down and find out what you have. Hope for nikasil's. |
As a '74, the likeliehood they are Nikasils is almost absolute. Those should be good to go. The it is just matter of if the ring lands on the pistons are OK and if the pistons haven't gone oval. Even if they have, you can buy JEs pretty cheaply (~$900).

That's all good to hear. I thought you couldn't re-use Nikasils. My mistake. I was planning on having JW do what machine work he was capable of, so I'll have him check the P&C's too.
The car is an early '74 (made in 10/73) so I imagine they're Nikasils. 2.7Racer, the oil pressure is just about zero at 1000 RPM. Is that bad?;) Thanks again. Nate |
I suspect you'll find worn out valve guides but the rest of the engine will be in pretty good shape. Low oil pressure on these early oil pump engines is common. You should do the post 76 oil pump upgrade and oil bypass mod as well as the standard case upgrades.
