Clutch fork hookup
when I put the trans back on the engine , I looked into the hole in the bellhousing, and I positioned the clutch fork so It engaged into the throwout bearing, and the slid the trans onto the motor. I put the engine/trans back into the car, hooked up the clutch cable, and the clutch wont disengage. The clutch pedal stays on the floor, and wont come up. There is no tension on the clutch helper spring. Can I reposition the splined clutch release lever to make it work? the clutch throwout fork seems to be engaging the throwout bearing. Where did I go wrong? I think Ive got it hooked up as in the picture in the technical articles. Does the motor have to come back out?

WHat year, make, and model? Why did you have your trans off? Answers to these might help those in the know, help you.

Ok, sorry its a 79 911 SC 3 liter . Trans was off because I replaced rings and head studs.

This may sound stupid (I should know because I did it), but make sure that the long arm with the circular spring is sprung towards the front of the car. You have to pull it through before putting on the little arm and the cable.

Kuhn Tune, what do you mean when you say the long arm with the circular spring is (sprung) towards the front of the car?, and you have to pull it through - pull what through? I am just trying to undertstand what you are saying.
thanks for the reply |
When I slid the trans onto the engine, I watched the two fingers on the throwout bearing fork slide into the large central groove on the throwout bearing. Isnt this what your supposed to do? Now when I apply pressure to the release lever, i cant get it to move the throw out bearing. If anybody out there can shed some light I'd surely appreciate it !

you need to cam over the helper spring there are pretty good directions in the service manual the bently manual doesnt cover it very well. DO NOT try to disengage the clutch by prying on the release lever, I did that on my turbo after i had problems lining up the throw out bearing with the shifter fork. had to pull the whole thing back out of the car and remove and reinstall the tranny, so while it was out i decided to pull on the release lever with a piece of pipe to check it and promptly broke the end of the lever off. so 80$ later every thing was back in the car and adjusted properly.

Ken911, what version of the service manual is it covered? and after you pulled the engine/ trans out again, and taken the trans off, what did you look for in aligning the throwout bearing on the shifter fork, at that point is there a test to know if you have it on right?
|
not sure the factory manuals I have are electronic versions. that I bought from a guy here for my turbo. the turbo tranny is a lot harder to align because instead of a ring with a groove to engage the fork there are 2 ears on the TO bearing to engauge it, so if they rotate at all it will pop off. the manual says align the ears with a straight edge. so the second time i just looked in the hole and it looked lined up ok. thats the point where I decided to test it by, pulling on the short engagement lever to operate the clutch and promptly broke off the tip of the lever.

there are 2 levers on the bottom of the tranny, there is the long one that the helper spring attaches to and the short one that actually operated the clutch fork.you will not be able to operate the clutch out of the car by pulling on the short lever, It sound like like you have not got the helper spring connected to the long lever correctly, you have to insert a long screwdriver behind the long leaver and cam it over.

i tried to copy over the pages that cover it in the manual but it's in a pdf file so I cant copy only the selected parts, I think the file is too big to e mail the whole thing.

clutch spring
Ken , I wish Wayne D. would have included that one sentence in his how-to clutch spring article. Rotate the helper spring clockwise, and it will pop into place. I think I got it fixed now, as now I have clutch action. I knew I watched the throwout bearing engage the fork just as I slipped the trans in. I remember thinking I dont want to have to pull out this S.O.B again. thanks for the quick reply

no problem it took me a while when i pulled the one out of my carrera I screwed with it for several hours then it popped into place. glad it worked out for you
