Is there any easy way to make a bar to measure cam gear offset?
I don't want to buy an expensive tool that I'll probably only use twice, somebody must have made their own already, I'd rather spend $5.00 on some metal and an hour fabbing it up than buying one or borrowing one.

I used the "honey can you come out here and hold this straight edge here for 10 minutes or so" method. I wasn't really starting from scratch though so it didn't take long to verify and I had the calculations already loaded in an excel spreadsheet so I just had to enter the measurements.

I've done it without the tool using the "honey" method 2 or 3 times and my measurements were always off. I'd trust the telltale wear on the sprocket more than the handheld straight edge method. (I use the Stomski tool.)
I've never come across a pre-964 motor that didn't measure up with the standard 3 shims on one side and 4 on the other. (964's motors measure up that way but come from the factory with 2 on each side for reason's I don't understand.) -Chris |
Holding the straight edge with one hand, and a digital vernier with the other. Seemed to work quite well.
