major oil leak

I have an 1983 sc motor in which I did a top end engine rebuild to replace broken devilar head studs about two months ago. I have only taken the car on short trips. Last weekend I took it out for it's first good run about an hour and got the RPM's up to about 5500 in all gears. I noticed the engine temp was little hot but not in the red. The car appeared to be performing fine. When I returned home and opened the engine compartment there was oil sprayed everywhere on the left side of the motor. Appeared to spray straight up against the engine lid. With oil everywhere it is hard to eyeball the source of the leak or what may have happened. As a novice mechanic I am unsure where to begin troubleshooting or is this a symptom of a seriuos problem like a blown engine. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll find an obvious leak somewhere. I doubt you have any kind of major engine problem, provided you didn't run the engine out of oil. I'd clean up the engine and run it to find the leak. Some sources are:

Cam oil lines
Oil temp/pressure switches and sensors
Thermostat O-ring
Breather hose

You might have also overfilled your oil and it didn't manifest itself until you got the engine hot. If this is the case the oil will come out of the breather connection to the air filter.

A similar thing happened to me recently. It turned out to be the oil pressure switch. See this thread Help - Oil everywhere!

You may not have the same leak, but the thread may be helpful.
