help w/ early turbo case

this smooth compound that's to the left of the slotted screw... it's some kind of a patch. can anyone tell me what type of damage this could be hiding? there is no visible crack from the inside. does this mean the condition of this case is "terminal"? thanks.

Sure looks like JBWeld.... Probably cracked or hit that side of the case. I guess the things I'd worry about it are:

1. Flow obstruction. You don't know how big the crack or hole is and therefore how much of the patch got pushed into the oil channel.
2. Will it break again?

If it were my engine I'd probably want to remove that crap and have a good aluminum welder make a more permanent repair. This certainly reduced the value of the case, but I doubt it's rendered unusable.

Dave, I'd say it's junk and you should sell it to me cheap! :)

There is a steel tube cast into the case under the aluminum at that point. A porous casting in this generally area are not uncommon and the factory recommended this type of repair. However it looks excessive. I would remove the adhesive (a propane torch will make it easy) access the damage and repair it if possible.
Without removing the adhesive there is no way to determine if it's repairable or not. My guess is that it will be repairable.
Good luck.
