Opinions wanted on Porsche 'modern' crankcase

Is the Porsche 'modern' flat-bottomed semi dry sump crankcase (Boxster/Cayman/997) any good?

Some people have bad-mouthed it and some other people have said it's good so I'm not sure. Why did Porsche change the crankcase altogether? Cheaper to manufacture?

But I can't imagine how can one type of crankcase be cheaper to manufacture than another. It's still six cylinders and it's still aluminum... isn't it?

Please enlighten me.

Its NOT the same engine as the GT-3/GT-3 ones and thats what Porsche races.

Porsche did the 986/996/997 engines to save money.

I know it's NOT the same engine as the GT3. I just wanted opinions.

So, is that only reason? Porsche to save money??

It's very sad. I love Caymans but I will not buy one until Porsche has released a particular model with the GT3 crankcase.

LOL,..I'm not comfortable expressing my opinion of these cars in a public forum but I'll simply tell you that I'll never buy any of these cars with that particular engine & transmission.

Money,......thats it. It was a cost-saving measure and you can prove this for yourself by calling your Porsche dealer and asking the price of the 993, GT-3, and 996-997 engines. Its an "illuminating" exercise.

I too, like the Cayman but it will never get the GT-3 engine/transmission until Porsche decides to race the car in ACO-sanctioned events. One shouldn't hold their breath,....

I have no facts but, a porsche tech at a dealership said they changed the casting technique for the water cooled engines.

Harold:

A clarification is needed:

The GT-2/GT-3 engine case is different from the 993 and older air-cooled ones but its the same basic design.

The 986-996-997 engines are completely and totally different in every way imaginable.
