Early S Alternator ?
Well, the Bosch Alternator doesnt seem to be charging the battery,, with a multimeter attached to the battery, it reads around 12 volts and the motor is not running.. with the multimeter attached and the motor running ir reads around 12 volts.. so I guessed that the alternator was bad and I had it checked at a drive up auto place.. they told me that the diode pattern was bad.. so the next day I was going to take out the alternator and get it checked but I wanted to do the unthinkable.. unhook the positive lead of the battery and see what happenes,, I know, I know,, its stated here all over the place ..."DONT DO IT" but what the heck,, its bad anyway... right!!
So with the car started and running , I unhooked the positive lead at the battery with a multimeter attached,,, the car kept running and the voltage at the unattached positive lead was almost 14 volts... Turned the car off and rehooked the positive lead to the battery, restarted the car and nothing new,, still a reading around 12 volts with the car running at any rpm.. Sidebar - I recently installed a pertronix ignition system and the tach started acting up,, before that installation,, I dont remember any odd acting tach,, so I am guessing that the pertronix system is responsible for it,, called pertronix and they want me to install a cap inline,, not diodes as previously mentioned,, they told me that the diode fix is not used anymore.. but the cap fix is.. havent done that yet. So, knowing all this,, I have a bad voltage regulator...check yes or check no.. Thanks to all and Happy Thanksgiving |
