Head Resurfacing
 

Hi Guys,

Just looking for a little advice. I have a 83 911SC that had 2 broken head studs on the exhaust side. The car has 37k original miles. I've torn the engine down and split the case (figured I may as well reseal the case). The top-end of the engine is excellant.

There was only a little evidence of blowby on #3 cylinder head on the exhaust side. Should I have the heads resurfaced or would I be safe to just install the new head studs & gaskets and proceed with the assembly? (i will clean the valves and install new seals)

Also, any thoughts on which studs I should use...993 or ARP?

Our car is only a weekend driver in the few (sunny) days of Michigan and never raced.

You will be fine with the 993 studs, saves a fair whack of money as well. As for the heads it is hard to say without actually seeing them.

With 37k miles and only 2 broken studs, it doesn't SOUND like you need to resurface the heads. I definitely would check and see, but if it will work without having to resurface, I would avoid resurfacing.

The 12 top head studs are probably steel (magnetic)? Why not get 12 steel lower studs as well, saves a lot of money, steel studs don't break in an application like yours. 993 or ARP are overkill on a stock 911SC, in my humble opinion.
