Looks good Mark. Alan does great work :) Now that is 6 current VARA race motors Alan has built. All of them run perfectly!

Vintage911Racer 11-27-2006 12:36 PM

Thanks Chad. Alan does do great work. Cant wait to get it back and in the car. With the new gearing and HP and Torque, this thing should be a beast. Looking forward to it. THe Pauter Rods are sweet. It will be interesting to see the difference between my motor and my fathers. I had so many other things done to it inside then he did...And I thought his was fast.

Looks great Mark. I love working with a media-tumbled case like that, SO clean..

Vintage911Racer 11-27-2006 02:01 PM

Thanks Scott. Not sure how he gets them so clean. But they are a peice of art...

Plavan 11-27-2006 02:36 PM

He actually uses an pneumatic air brush and then parts washer, and repeats.....I never have seen a guy be so meticulous about his work. It takes him some time to do that. Wait till you see your trans all cleaned up to. :)

Vintage911Racer 11-27-2006 02:40 PM

Clean trans.

You mean like this:D

This is how your trans will look after Alan does his magic.

YUP. LOL posted at the same time

Vintage911Racer 11-27-2006 02:45 PM

Cool. He is doing the same Trans mounts on mine like he did on yours.
Can't wait to get this thing back in the car.

Mark the engine looks great! When is the "maiden voyage"?
I am trying for Willow on the 13th of December.

Vintage911Racer 11-27-2006 08:35 PM

Motor

Thanks Mark. Yours looks great too.

I am thinking of dec 13 with you or University of VARA.
They are doing annual tech there as well. So I could break in the motor and get the car teched for next season.

If I cant go those dates then february 2 or 9th with JP and the rest of the Plavan gang at willow.

I just installed my MSD Box and coil as well. What is your rev limit set at?

8,000 RPM

Plavan 11-28-2006 07:13 AM

I have a 7700 rpm module in (actually cuts off a little over 7600) With those cams you do not make much HP over 7500.... it flattens out on the dyno. Might as well save the bearings.

Vintage911Racer 11-28-2006 07:43 AM

I have mine at 7800. Since I went with the Pauter rods I have decided to set it a bit higher. I will use the 8K chip at Cal Speedway.

I wonder how accurate the pills are? If you are running two boxes both with 8000 chips in them. Is it a bad thing if one kicks in before the other?

My shift light is set at 7500, that is when I shift. I rarely hit the rev limiter, only when brain fade kicks in.

You, too, can get your cases this clean. A $10 blasting gun, your compressor (even if far from industrial capacity), and several large bags of baking soda from Costco or the like. Do it outdoors, and wash the (warning) very considerable residue away. I did get rid of most of the larger bits on my tranny case with the traditional brushing and poking and brake cleaning fluids, but this got things out of corners and removed the seemingly permanent stains.

This stuff is so benign it doesn't even hurt your gloveless fingers when you blast them (at least with my relatively low pressure/CFM setup).

Of course, if you have a better setup you can make less mess. I am trying to see if I can make a large cardboard box, some visqueen, duct tape, big rubber gloves, and a beat up shop vac reduce the mess so I can do this indoors on smaller parts - heads, cam carriers, cylinders, carbs.

I don't know what baking soda does to sod, but it didn't seem to kill mine off after a good squirting of water.

Alan does fantastic work if I am not mistaken he works for a Supercup team on the weekends.

regards

Vintage911Racer 11-28-2006 12:44 PM

Yes, you are correct. Allan does do that and yes he does do great work.
