Cam ID just by removing valve covers?

Is there a way to actually see the part number on my cams by simply removing a valve cover?

I could swear I was told this is possible but when i looked last night it seems the area of the cam where the number would be stamped is hidden.

Do i just need to shut up and buy a dial gauge/z block?

I know on some cam's I've seen an ID number on the shank, but I've never really looked at it... Might be a part number.

Erick:

You can see part numbers on the cams but thats no guarantee of what they actually are,... :)

Since many cams get repaired/reground to different profiles, one really needs to measure lift & duration to be sure.

but how do i see it? all i can see is the lobes, not the straight part that would have the stamp.

Porsche casts the numbers between the lobes so one usually needs to rotate the engine to see them. The last two numbers are the key ones and they are visible.
