cost savings on top end rebuild

In an effort to save money, and get to know my car better, I plan to do the engine removal myself and intended to send the heads off for the valve guide work. I'm wondering though if I get the work done locally what will the labor cost be (ballpark figure in hours) if I just remove the ancillary stuff, i.e. intake shroud, etc myself and then let the mechanic do the removal of the heads and possibly reinstallation of the heads. I also would prefer the mechanic do the cam timing since that seems to be an issue for some beginners.
TIA

With the book, and advice from local Dallas Pelicans, you can do all the assembly / disassembly yourself. Yes, timing the cams is tough the first time. It's easy once you've seen it done. I read that section of the book a number of times and still didn't get it. Then had a guy help me, and wow, that wasn't so bad.

You'll save cash by doing that work yourself, then send the heads to a recommended shop (someone who knows Porsche heads).

Thanks for the reply...I"ll re read that section and see if I can follow it well enough to try it.

Buck, you can do this. I recently separated my heads and it was pretty straight forward. Give me a ring if you want to come over and check it out.

Can't advise on reassembly as I'm a long way off...

I was afraid of the cam timing, I was wrong. After you triple check yourself, you're sure it's right. It's actually fun.
